What Types of Companies Can Use the Intranet
An Intranet can be installed in any company with a local or wide-area network, but it is not for everyone. These are the prerequisites that make the Intranet more attractive to some companies than others.
Mid-to large size organization. The larger the company, the more useful the Intranet. Although an Intranet can be used in workgroups as small as a dozen people, it’s true value comes in organizations that are spread out across a campus, over many floors in a building, or in geographically dispersed cities.
Integrated TCP/IP network. The network must be totally integrated, using the TCP/IP protocol, and every workstation must have an assigned IP address (in the format 197.23.145.82).
Large ratio of online users. Naturally, to use the Intranet, you need access to a computer screen.
Mouse-and-window environment. The computer should have a mouse-and-windows interface, such as a PC running Win3.1 or 95, a Mac, or a UNIX system running Motif. The Intranet is totally cross-platform, so any mix of Unix, Mac and PC works. Companies with a large number of mainframe terminals may finally use Intranet to justify a conversion to PC or the future “net-PC.”
