How Employees Use an Intranet
With an Intranet, users can set up their own miniature “world wide web” on their internal network.
The same way people set up “web sites” on the real WWW, the web sites within a corporation can contain documents, data, and multimedia provided by people inside the company.
Users can surf the Intranet from their desktops using web browsers like Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Thus there are two types of people who make the Intranet work: the authors who provide the information that is placed on the web servers (web sites) and the end users who use the information.
Authors must be able to read and write directly to the server document directories. The authors might use popular tools like Microsoft Word, FrontPage, PageMill, or Navigator Gold to create web content.
Users, on the other hand, have read-only access through their web browsers. This means they cannot change any of the information they are viewing.
