What Is the Intranet?
The Intranet is just Internet technology used in-house.
You might have web servers scattered throughout your network and people using web browsers to access the information on them, just as you have on the WWW.
The difference is that there is no Internet connection required. You can create and use an Intranet without ever being connected to the Internet.
The Intranet lets your employees share information freely across the enterprise, usually without the access restrictions previously common on corporate networks especially when connecting from remote locations such as branch and foreign offices.
The most important feature, however, is that the Intranet is totally compatible with existing systems. It does not require you to change the existing applications or network protocols you already use. Instead, it adds another layer of functionality to your network.
